About us

The University of the Mountains is a non-profit, voluntary organization that was born in Crete in 2008. Its goal is to unite the university community with the people of the countryside, through actions that promote education, health, culture and social cohesion.

Our identity

The University of the Mountains is not a “university” in the usual sense.

It is a vibrant community of knowledge, contribution and collaboration, where academics, researchers, students and residents of mountainous areas meet to learn from each other.

With respect for nature, tradition and people, the University of the Mountains gives new life to the values of solidarity and participation.

Our philosophy

Solidarity

We believe that knowledge is only valuable when shared. Every person has something to teach and something to learn — regardless of their age or profession.

We learn from each other

Our philosophy is based on mutual learning and collaboration. Scientists, teachers, students, farmers and craftsmen unite through the exchange of experiences and ideas.

We combine theory and practice

From weaving workshops to augmented reality applications and online communities.

The power of volunteers

The University of the Mountains exists because of its people. More than 200 volunteers — doctors, teachers, students, artists and Cretans — offer their time and knowledge to each mission. Participation is not based on titles or positions, but on the shared desire to improve life in mountainous areas.

Autonomy through solidarity

The University of the Mountains operates without state or European funding. All its activities are carried out thanks to the voluntary participation of academics, students, professionals and residents of local communities. Self-financing and collectivity ensure the independence, transparency and continuity of our work.
