
The visit of the volunteers of the University of the Mountains to the historic village of Asi Gonia, Chania, on Friday, September 26, 2025, carried out its planned actions with particular success.
The Peer-to-Peer Teaching
In the morning, the Peer-to-Peer Teaching of the students on the sacred art of Weaving and the great value of Self-Sufficiency was implemented at the Primary School of Asi Gonia.
The excellent teachers of the school participated with the students, together with
the associate professor of Sociology of Education of the University of Crete, Mr. I. Pyrgiotakis, and
the inspirer of the Penelope Gandhi Mission, Ms. V. Terzaki Pallikaris.
The Medical Examinations
The teams of volunteer doctors-nurses of the University,
led by the professor of Ophthalmology, Mr. I. Pallikaris, and
the neurologist, Mr. Minas Tzagournisakis, examined 70 patients.
The Cafe of the Mountains
After the completion of the actions, at the hospitality venue of the exceptional Koundourakis family “To Potistiri”,
the Deputy Mayor of the Municipality of Apokoronas Mr. G. Gyparakis,
the President of the Cultural Association of Asi Gonia Mr. Michalis Glentzakis,
the Professor of Physics at the University of Crete Mr. Evangelos Mantadakis,
together with the priest Father Vasilios Chatzidakis and residents of the village, around a table with the goods of God, discussed the issues that concern the proud and unique village of Asi Gonia.
The residents of the village are struggling in a moving way to stay in the villages, to cultivate the land, to feed animals and to weave their future, with solidarity, faith in God and love for the homeland.
