The famous Lady of Auxerre, dressed in natural silk threads from her homeland, Crete, at the Museum of Ancient Eleftherna

“A long garment, just enough to show the ends of the legs, in a pale white color but with gold embroidery, as befits a princess. Or a young goddess, like Persephone, or even a mortal, aristocrat or priestess.
In a gesture perhaps of prayer, she is dressed in a decorated dress, a wide belt and an epaulette on her shoulders. And her face has all the characteristics of the sculpture of the 7th century BC, which is defined as Daedalic art (a name derived from the mythical sculptor Daedalus): an oval shape, a gentle smile, a strict forehead and heavy, multi-layered hair. The famous Lady of Auxerre, a sculpture that was discovered in ancient Eleutherna in the 19th century but went abroad, is now presented in a different way.”
The garment of the Lady of Auxerre, Fronimi, has been woven and realized with devotion in the archetypal Cretan Argastiri, with Cretan handmade silk from the Penelope Gandhi mission, of the University of the Mountains.
This same precious garment of our Mission, worn by the model, photographed by Vangelis Kyris, then printed on fabric and its details embroidered by Anatoli Georgiev, will be presented in the exhibition of the Archaeological Museum of Eleftherna, which will be inaugurated on July 22, 2022, by the excellent professor and creator of the Museum, Mr. Nikos Stampolidis.
