Dear fellow travelers,
the University of the Mountains, visited the Pindos region and Metsovo, a few days ago and had interesting discussions with the local residents.
In the context of this excursion, Ms. Varvara Terzakis met in Metsovo with Ms. Elena Averof, who has dedicated a lot of love, knowledge and valuable time to Metsovo and the textile industry of Epirus.
The two women had a good and useful discussion about the new generation of women and their willingness in recent years to create and manage to live self-sufficiently from the arts of the hands, in their home with peace and security.
There was a special discussion about natural yarns and specifically about the processing, study and spinning of sheep’s wool, in the livestock-raising regions of our country.
It is a centuries-old study for the Greek woman, and it constitutes a modern and safe proposal of culture and economy for the people.
These journeys together between the south and the north of our homeland, with the sacred weavers, the women who endure and struggle hard in this mountainous and historic place, are deeply moving.
We know well that the ties that connect people to their native land should not be limited to observations, feelings and impulses about the past, but to actions that will stop or mitigate the almost imposed apeism, the complete uniformity of human life and the alienation from one’s own self.
In our Mission for the last 20 years at least, we have devotedly turned and worked relentlessly on this vital problem.
The results to date are exceptional and measurable from Gavdos to Evros, with the scientific support of the brilliant scientists of the University of Crete and the volunteers of the University of the Mountains.
