The University of the Mountains in the mountainous Mylopotamos of Rethymno

The University of the Mountains, in a multi-year journey long before even the most imaginative mind suspected the coming crisis of society, uniting scientists of various disciplines from the University of Crete and from other universities abroad, craftsmen, farmers, livestock breeders, little gods of everyday life, walks Crete and the surrounding islands, with a coordinated step and an unwavering gaze, beyond shooting and profit. In these years, all the volunteers together made 100 excursions to 300 mountainous and remote villages. We examined and treated with professors-doctors, doctors, nurses and students, more than 15,000 patients.

We met and discussed focused problems of each village or region in the Mountain Cafes, with 10,000 people. We taught and were taught by 3,000 students, in 100 different schools, with the help and presence of 500 teachers and professors from all over Greece.

We cultivate, process and produce flax, silk and wool throughout our Crete. We collect flowers and plants, we experiment and make dye materials, we touch purple, with the same knowledge from ancient times, of our holy women, our eternal warriors, and we weave exquisite, historical, certified Cretan textiles, which adorn large museum and private collections of high cultural heritage, all over the world.

Because love will never cease to move the world and because the best prophet is the one who loves,

We invite you to Krana Mylopotamos, on Friday, March 4th at 5:00 PM, at the village cafe.

There, in a large open gathering, the Mayor and the Municipal Council of the Municipality of Mylopotamos will hand over to our Executive Committee the renovated old Primary School of the village, which was generously and kindly donated to house our Mountain University. There, at the highest point of the horizon, we have organized a school of hope and pioneering creation, with the incorruptible folk culture and its little gods as our master, together with our brilliant scientists.

Nature, as the generator of the winds, the joys and the sorrows of life, has never left man unprotected. She opened her paths wide, where the mitato became a workshop of life, the flax climbed, as in the old days, on the grandmother’s pulley for the sake of the common life… of the simple life. The vein and the water of life exist, for those who still thirst, for those who deeply believe that the future is not Elsewhere, but here in our own hands.
